Hmm… due to the snow it took me more than an hour more to arrive in munich…
Despite all the weather warnings I am on my way to Munich…

“These notes are a miscellany of grammatical rules and explanations, comments on style, and suggestions on usage I put together for my classes. Nothing here is carved in stone, and many comments are matters of personal preference — feel free to psychoanalyze me by examining my particular hangups and bêtes noires. Anyone who can resist turning my own preferences into dogma is welcome to use this HTML edition. Feedback is always welcome.
I should be clear up front: I’m not a linguist, nor a scholar of the history of the language. (If you’re curious about who I am, you can look at my CV and decide whether I’m worth listening to.) Linguists are wary of “prescriptive” grammars, which set out standards of “correct” and “incorrect” usage — grammars that usually insist correctness reigned in the good old days, whereas we’ve been on the road to hell ever since. Professional linguists are adamant that the language isn’t “declining,” and that many usages censured by self-styled grammarians are in fact perfectly reasonable, whether on historical grounds, logical grounds, or both.
And they’re right. I reject any model of linguistic decline, in which the twenty-first century speaks a decadent version of the language of some golden age. I don’t lie awake at night worrying about the decline of “proper” English. (In my grumpier moods, I’m convinced the whole world’s going to hell — but then, I’m convinced the whole world’s been going to hell since time out of mind. In my more sanguine moods, I wonder whether hell isn’t such a bad place to be after all.) I know, too, that many things offered as “good” grammar or style have little basis in history or in logic.”
OMG! That is awesome…

Fractals are beautiful…especially when they are formed naturally…these fractals did form naturally. They are bacterial cultures in petri dishes… very impressive
Billions and billions of bacterial landscape architects pruning — no less in environments poisoned with antibiotics — other bacterial landscape architects, dead or alive, to form dazzling arabesque parterres. The self-organizing embroidery of organisms in constant Darwinian mode.

Still in the testing phase the instructables step-by-step how-tos are quite a good concept for online collaboration….
Instructables is a venue for showing what you make and how others can make it.
Making things is part of being human. Whether you make bikes, kites, food, clothing, protocols for biology research, or hack consumer electronics, good instructions are critical.
Instructables is a step-by-step collaboration system that helps you record and share your projects with a mixture of images, text, ingredient lists, CAD files, and more. We hope to make documentation simple and fast. Show your colleagues how to operate a machine, show your friends how to build a kayak, show the world how to make cool stuff.
Everybody knows me as the gadget-loving guy who cannot resist any chance to play with technology. And this night was once again time to play.
I was in bed complaining about the fact that I have to get up to change the track iTunes is playing at the moment. I thought: It should be possible to remote control iTunes and everything else on any machine in the room.
I instantly got up and looked for something that might do what I wanted… And what I found outdid my expectations by far: Salling Clicker is the name of the tool.
What’s the point of the tool? It’s simply a server and a client. The server runs on any Windows or Macintosh machine and accepts connections via TCP/IP or bluetooth. I am using bluetooth at the moment… The client runs on almost any phone, in my case a Windows Mobile 5 phone.
The installation is painless – on the Mac it comes as a Preference Pane:
This represents the menu you have on your client…on my phone in this case…
You even can configure phone events…for example: What happens when the phone rings?
The user interface is very similar to an iPod. You simply control it with the D-Pad of the phone. Clicking the D-Pad is selecting…
To give you an idea what it looks like to play a song…look:
Yes there is cover art…and track rating…
And … you can search… and find…
This is the first tool for about two years that flashed big way. I instantly registered my copy (the 30 click-limitation is quite annoying) and got a serial number within minutes. As I am exploring the tool I even found extensions for the remote control to acces my eMail…my ICQ…oh well and remote controlling Powerpoint presentations is one base feature…
The tool is, like I said, available for Windows and Macintosh – so take a look it’s really worth the try.
I thought winter would be over after seeing the temperatures raise on the 19th of February…
But I should have known better… so it was more like this today:
Just not to forget… a picture of warmer times:
That’s a humongous tank isn’t it? And it’s shiny new… hopefully it will prevent more catastrophes.
Since my girlfriend has a brand new 1440×1050 notebook display it’s hard to ignore that 19″a 1280×1024 are not the highest possible dpi to have… and as a matter of fact I really want to have some more DPIs on my 19″ TFTs…
Take a look at this schematic:
As you can see, SXGA is quite Low-End these days 🙂 But we have to wait before the manufactures get serious with their 200 DPI displays…
WOW! Why didn’t we think of that?
It arrived and it’s beautiful. I just bought two of them today… maybe more in the next days…
I personally really like the iced look of them…
“LED Throwies are an inexpensive way to add color to any ferromagnetic surface in your neighborhood. A Throwie consists of a lithium battery, a 10mm diffused LED and a rare-earth magnet taped together. Throw it up high and in quantity to impress your friends and city officials.”
Beside the list of the needed parts you can even watch a video of the throwies, beautifying some-ones neighborhood:
The turtles started their hibernation on december the 21th and today it finally was the right time to end the hibernation period…. additionally Steffi rearranged the aquarium…:
I was pointed to a very very very interesting research website today. It’s the website of Jefferson Y. Han – a consultant at the NYU’s Department of Computer Science. He is showing off the research projects he is working on. What an impressive portfolio!!!
One of these projects is the “Multi-Touch Interaction” which means:
“While touch sensing is commonplace for single points of contact, multi-touch sensing enables a user to interact with a system with more than one finger at a time, as in chording and bi-manual operations. Such sensing devices are inherently also able to accommodate multiple users simultaneously, which is especially useful for larger interaction scenarios such as interactive walls and tabletops. “
This video and project came up when some people discussed the recent Apple patents like “gestures for touch sensitive input devices”.
But there’s more to discover on Hans website – so go there immediately and get inspired…
The same procedure as every year: today punxsutawney phil is going to be asked if the winter will end soon… let’s hope so!
I was playing a relaxing round of Marble Blast Ultra and my 360 hangs…
Yes, I know that four red lights = A/V cable error…but it’s a great picture, isn’t it?
- does not boot
- hangs while playing
- all lights are green
And after all the 360 isn’t hot in any way. The PSU is cold – even the fans are off – the 360s fans are in low-speed mode… But if I wait several minutes and boot then it will boot into the guide and even start games… but will hang after some minutes of playing…
I made a video to lighten up the situation:

P.S.: you can also download this video via the podcast link (see left)
I’ll talk to the support in a couple of hours…hopefully I get a replacement soon.
Getting a call and being told “Hey, we’re going THERE for holidays in two weeks!” is .. well 😉 I do not begrugde it my parents…
Since it’s really cold outside (-5 degree celsius whilst I am writing this) and the exam period is getting closer I am sitting behind my desk like I should. Just 13 days to go for the first exam…grrr…
In fact here’s my personal perfect learning enviroment (pple):

Sicher, das ist keine schlimme Sache, aber schon irgendwie kurios.
I just updated the warfare website… go and have a look – and subscribe.
After cosrahn has successfully destroyed the coffee machine the real-one finally arrived. A “Saeco Cafe Prima“. Well it’s the cheapest coffee machine that fit our needs. The first cups are very promising – we’ll have a lot of fun with that one 😉
Now all that’s left is a “Club Mate flatrate”…maaaeeeednesss!!! *g*
Well, recently a friend of mine took this foto with the camera of her mobile in Canada…
So… they are really back? Where have they been? And what it’s supposed to mean anyways?
Sehr geehrter Herr Trefz,
So here we are: a new year and just two days after the 22c3. As we can tell everything was recorded as planned and everything went just great.
I want to tell everybody who helped to make this happen: Thank you very much. It was a pleasure and great fun to work with you guys. The results that we all together achieved speak for themselves: nearly 1 Tbyte of downloaded live-stream bytes. Nearly 400 listeners on our streams at peak times.
In fact there is a lot to do afterwards: We have to cut the MPEG2 files (5 Mbit) of each lecture to set start and end-times correctly. We have to tag them and make them available (1 to 5 gigabyte each) for you as soon as possible – which means when the last hard drive arrives from berlin here in Ilmenau.
When all MPEG2 files are complete we complete our MPEG4 encodings – which means: we are already encoding everything we have in MPEG4 1.2 Mbit.
This is our main focus at the moment. It should be possible to make everything of the above mentioned available within January. After all this is done (or maybe in the meantime, we don’t know at the moment) the remaining WMV on-demand streams will become available as we have to reencode. So check back here to get more information and updates about this topic.
I often was asked why the WMV on-demand streams were only available for the first day: the answer is easy – we tested if it’s feasible to cut them nearly live – and we came to the conclusion that it raises the stress bar for our team to high to handle it the complete 4 days of the conference. So we changed our plans to ensure that you have a mostly flawless live-streaming experience.
At the end: Here is the list of the people I want to thank for their support and help at 22c3 (without any order actually):
laforge and his team, maedness, mucki, namenlos, manu, cosrahn, Agtmulda, yray, cutcat, ecki, ahzf, ambanus, somi, all the video and audio angels that made the great audio and video possible, Ambion for the great support, the POC who helped were our cable guys and supported us even with coffee, the NOC which made IPv6 happen finally and made the best conference network ever possible…. and a whole lot more people I forgot.
If you buy a big-ass boat, you’ll have to name it.
seen by Dominik in Florida last year
Unexpected and very very sweet: When my friends arrived here at the congress center they brought a birthday cake for me… great! Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate it.
In fact – it’s the sweetest 360 i’ve ever seen.
Thanks to cosrahn, cutcat, thamthon, ahzf, agtmulda, maedness, mucki, yray,…
there will be an official press release in the next days…until then here are some teasers for your pleasure:
Look what else we bought with Tino Seebers membership fee:
thanks to teliko for the great pictures.
The warfare has begun! This whole campaign will be in german – so english readers please ignore everything with NYBLOG in the article name (in fact even ignore everything regarding NYBLOG in the rest of the internet as well)

What a great contest! Get your Photoshop started and create a world “if the hackers rule”.
“Remember when computer hackers were the big scare? Sure they might be 15-year-olds computer nerds who t41k 2 mUc4 l1k3 7h15!!!!!!!!!!!!11 [talk too much like this]. But that doesn’t mean that, with a few deft keystrokes, they couldn’t take over the world. And what would everyday life be like then? Get ready for some l337 h4xx0r1ng!!!!!!111 [elite hacker language].
The rules of this game are thus: In this contest you will show us images from a world run by l337 hax0rs. Your images should ideally focus on something that already has text on it. (i.e. a shampoo bottle with instructions written in html or the Coca-Cola logo written in poorly spelled gibberish). As always, quality is a must. We will remove poor entries no matter how much we like you. You’ll have 48 hours for this contest, so make your submission count.”

It’s good to see that there are at least some people on this planet that innovate the things we are working with each day. One innovation for today is “deskloops” – a great application that reinvents the way we switch tasks and organize the windows of the applications we use for our daily work.
Since Deskloops is currently in beta state you can download it for free at Xilokits website.
“Imagine yourself at the center of a virtual loop where all the windows you use are spread out around you. Whichever window you need to view can be centered in front of you with a click of a button.
Take this idea and zoom into your pc environment. With Deskloops, all the windows you have open are aligned side by side in a loop-like order. No more countless windows arranged one on top of the other in a confusing manner. You can access all the information you need and navigate through it easily.
The loop can be rotated clockwise and counterclockwise simply by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen and using right click.
Think of the loop as a dynamic rubber band; with each newly opened window the loop automatically grows. With every closed or minimized window, the loop becomes smaller.
Anytime you want to return to the desktop, double click on Deskloops tray icon and the windows will shift aside in one swift motion.”
[11:16] BtK: wo bist du gerad?
[11:17] cosrahn: aufm Klo
[11:17] BtK: sehr schön
[11:17] cosrahn: du hast gefragt
This year more than any year before the 22nd Chaos Communication Congress needs your help!
Since FeM e.V. plans to help the team of the 22c3 with equipment and manpower there never can be enough hands to help at such a big event.
If you want to assist and help us recording and streaming the whole congress than surf to the official 22c3 wiki and state your intention to help by contacting the orga-team telling them that you want to be a videoangel.

On the way back home I came past a house where one particular window attracted my interest. A huge 1337 is in bright letters in that window. Obviously some elite hackers are living there…
When I made the pictures I noticed that just one floor down right from my elite window another obviously rich students are watching tv on some kind of big ass tv – probably a projector…
Since I don’t have the space (and money) for such artefacts as a big ass tv – I am just jealous with the guys…I want one for my 360… okay let’s start small: I want a 360!
