Knight Rider: a conclusion

Da will man dabei sein 🙂

One step closer to digital nirvana…

Thanks to a podcast I found a great software for my iPhone and iPod touch. It’s a small tool which does cost less than 3 Euro and it’s served by a server tool which runs on Windows and Mac OS X.

It’s called Air Video and it’s frikin’ awesome! ™

What you do is you install the server software and point it to all your directories / drives that might contain video material. You then take your iPhone and install the client app. If you configured the server to be available over the internet you can now connect from anywhere you want using a pass-pin (which is generated) and a password (which is set by you). And by “from anywhere” they mean “anywhere”. WLAN or 3g didn’t make any difference in my test. You start the client, point to a video file and most of the time you are asked if you a) want to directly play is (if the file is ipod-compatible) or b) if you want to live-convert it and play it (when the file isn’t compatible and needs to be re-encoded live for you) or c) if you want to add the file to a conversion queue which will off-line convert the video for you.

In terms of “finding your video” it does look like this:

Air Video

Simple, eh? Taping a video will bring up this screen:

IMG_0388

As I said – Play directoy, Play with Live Conversion and Offline-Conversion-Queue…

It did work with EVERY Video I tried. When I tried Full-HD Movies my serving PC wasn’t able to handle the load but everyhing in SD worked great which is perfect for me.

onwindows

Therefore I can highly recommend this tool – it really does work better than anything I’ve seen before.

Never trust any statistic you’ve not faked for yourself

Watching the daily dose of news television could become the start of a rant.

statistik

Found in the german “heute journal” show from the 14th of May 2009. So guys – 526 is bigger than 527 at last!

new tv set arrived

Finally we got a TV set. Since Samsung announced new LED based sets we ordered a 46 inch tv. It was delivered today (yesterday the Mac mini which will drive the mediacenter arrived). I only had a short test-run scanning for cable stations… so more of that in the following days – especially more of the mediacenter configuration.

What a difference a year makes…

A feature of my harddisk video rekorder is to take screenshots. So I took around 900 video still shots in the last two years. I had some minutes to take a look at them and found a real gem:

So on 23rd of May 2008 JC Flowers obviously wanted to pay EUR 22,50 per Hypo Real Estate share. As of now this same share is worth EUR 0,66 – What a difference a year makes.

schlag-denraab

you don’t understand what’s been said: download subtitles!

If you are frequently watching foreign language TV Shows you might be interested in subtitles for your TV shows:

“Here you can find subtitles for the most popular TV Shows and TV series. Subtitles are available in multiple languages. All subtitles here are packed with WinZip, you must unpack to use it. To watch DivX/XviD movies with subtitles you first need to install a DirectShow filter for Windows Media Player which is called DirectVobSub.”

“Unix is a user hostile operating system”

I found the almost complete “Computer Chronicles” recordings on archive.org – and boy this is fun!

I picked some episodes and found very interesting things – like this particular episode from 1985. It’s about Unix and obviously one of the presenters has his very own opinion about Unix.

Formula Student 2008

Since last year FeM is recording and live streaming the annual Formula Student Event in Germany:

“Screeching tires, smouldering heads and impressive technical innovations – welcome to the Formula Student Germany 2008!
Join the Brunel Race at our stand. As a virtual race driver you’ll be able to win the Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring. The fastest driver gets the chance to win 2 tickets for the Formula 1 Event at Nürburgring 2009.”

If you don’t know what Formula Student is…you may want to read this:

“Students build a single seat formula racecar with which they can compete against teams from all over the world. The competition is not won solely by the team with the fastest car, but rather by the team with the best overall package of construction, performance, and financial and sales planning.

Formula Student challenges the team members to go the extra step in their education by incorporating into it intensive experience in building and manufacturing as well as considering the economic aspects of the automotive industry. Teams take on the assumption that they are a manufacturer developing a prototype to be evaluated for production. The target audience is the non-professional Weekend-Racer, for which the racecar must show very good driving characteristics such as acceleration, braking and handling. It should be offered at a very reasonable cost and be reliable and dependable. Additionally, the car’’s market value increases through other factors such as aesthetics, comfort and the use of readily available, standard purchase components.

The challenge the teams face is to compose a complete package consisting of a well constructed racecar and a sales plan that best matches these given criteria. The decision is made by a jury of experts from the motorsport, automotive and supplier industries. The jury will judge every team’s car and sales plan based on construction, cost planning and sales presentation. The rest of the judging will be done out on the track, where the students demonstrate in a number of performance tests how well their self-built racecars fare in their true environment.”

Starting this friday there will be a livestream available (Flash and Windows Media). Great stuff!

Xbox Media Center for OSX renames itself to PLEX

It’s not as many of those fance company-blogs like gizmodo have written: not the Xbox Media Center project (which makes XBMC for Windows, Linux, Xbox 1 and OSX) renamed itself – infact only the fork of OSXBMC renamed itself to PLEX.

“The one name that stuck was Plex. I like it because it evokes “cineplex” and the suffix means “comprising a number of parts” which the application certain does. In mathematics, you use the suffix to mean “ten to the power of the number” (e.g. oneplex = 10).

Because there are no four-letter domain names left (seriously, try to find one!) we decided to square the plex, so to speak. Think of either plex^2 or plex squared (the beta logo below tries to connote the word “plex” inside a square that might represent a TV screen). The domain names are plex2.com, plexsquared.com, and plexsquare.com for good measure. They are not active yet.

In the coming days, we’ll be working on the rebranding process, including the application packaging, logo, web domains, etc. In the longer term, we have some exciting things in the skin department as well. Stay tuned, and thanks for all your support; we really are lucky to have such an great community.”

Along with the new name comes a new logo:

YAPS progress (epg, sap / sdp, asp.net integration,…)

It’s been some time since I wrote about my little digital video disk recorder project and I think it’s time to wrap up some things. First of all I am using this software myself on a daily basis, having recorded about 1000 recordings in the last 4 months alone tells something. YAPS now is capable of handling multiple users – with each one having their own recordings and play-stop-positions.

Here are the new features in a short list:

  • Electronic Program Guide (EPG) Integration (multiple transponders/streams if you like)
  • Session Announcement Protocol / Session Description Protocol Integration
  • Multi-User support with capability checking
  • Cassini / ASP.NET Integration to allow ASP.NET web applications to run on YAPS
  • WCF Webservice interface to expose video disk recorder internal data (recordings list, event list,…)
  • Automatic and Reoccuring recordings
  • several new graphics

Pay it twice

When today the movie “Earth” aka “Unsere Erde” starts in cinemas around the country you may have the chance to experience something very special: a real cinematic déjà-vu.

erde_big

Let me explain how:

What many people don’t know for sure: This movie is a best-of of the same-named TV-series previously aired on ARD some time ago and after that on other public stations. So if you are an avid documentation-watcher you are going to pay for something already seen (and maybe even stored at home, not to mention the monthly TV-fees…).

The original series contains eleven episodes of 45 mins (Uncut 48 mins, BBC-airing). It’s not difficult to sum up and recognize what’s missing (of course) in the movie-version.

You still may say: But I wanna enjoy it on a big screen with a crowd and once in my life it’s ok paying for old stuff.

Then I better say nothing about “Deep Blue”…

TV review: Treasure Island (ProSieben)

I have to admit that mostly than there is a big budget tv-miniseries I am going to watch it. They are ambitious, expensive and somehow unusual. Maybe you remember that Nibelungen-tv-version sometime ago: huge advertising, high expectations and in the end a merely low result.

So Treasure Island is not that bad. It keeps you busy for two evenings, but could have been way better:

Here a list of potential flaws:

1. Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-rip-of

Some of the characters acts like the ones from the big picture. John Silver like Johnny Depp and the two english soldiers like those pirate counterparts.

2. Modern dialogues

It is curious to hear the people talking in modern slang and maybe cost the movie some classical flair.

3. Actors

The producers did a big casting for this one. They did not have always a good hand. The acting performances go up and down through the film. This must not be bad acting, it also may be a sign of weak directing.

4. Known faces

To cast well known comedy actors in important roles is a thing I would be very careful with, because you permamently have to think of it and therefore it harms the overall atmosphere.

5. Invent new roles

Inventing roles is always a sin, even when it is a girl showing her naked body numerous times. I guess, this is simpy a marketing thing to attract a modern young audience.

But of course we will wait and hope for a better next one…

FeM at the Formula Student FSG07 Event at the Hockenheimring

Everybody needs more than one job these days and so does FeM. One team at the Chaos Communication Camp 07 and one at the Hockenheimring, recording and live streaming the events.

how (almost) everything works at ISWIsion

Namenlos wrote about how almost everything is held together at this years ISWI technically. Well he even draw something neat to look at and say “Look, that we did!”

Projekt.”

And then deka came and created another drawing of the Live Streaming infrastructure:

ISWI – ISWISION Radio and FeM DVB-T parts coming together…

There’s something great going to happen this summer. After the great experience we had with the DVB-T TV Station of the Maintech guys at the 23c3 Achim decided that it would be great to have such a DVB-T TV Station for FeM e.V.. He went through the hassle of getting a license and organized the needed hardware. Today one of the important parts arrived… but first a teaser:

Yes! FeM is going to broadcast 24 hours a day from June 2nd to 10th the ISWISION and ISWIradio via DVB-T on channel 23 (490 Mhz). Today the antenna arrived… this thing is humongeous:

Achim wants me to shout out to the partners of this DVB-T FeM e.V. project: Maintech GmbH and SR-Systems. Consider that done.

If you want more information stay tuned on technology-ninja. In the meantime you can read the press feedback:

Forschungsgemeinschaft elektronischer Medien e. V. veranstaltet erstmals Ereignisfernsehen

Gadget Geeks video podcast

“Gadget Geeks” is a new video podcast show made by some guys from Berlin. Just wanted to point you to that 😉 Give it a try.

P.S.: this is episode 0. Hopefully that does not mean that they’re going to argue why they did not start with episode 1 in the next episodes…

P.P.S.: I like the Schäuble picture 😉

P.P.P.S.: Oh… what about more… NOT OSX specific stuff? It’s not as if there are no OSX only podcasts available…

there’s a big ass tv when you need it

I was forced to do other things yesterday evening when my friends of FeM e.V. decided to take out their big-ass tv and play a some WiiSports on a house…

Of course that little game had a purpose: They wanted to test if the Sanyo projector is bright enough for the upcoming drive-in cinema season…

You can read more (in german however) on the official FeM blog.

We’re in the process of making it as TV-like as we can, with programmes, channels and adverts. You can also see some things that we think will enhance the TV experience: searching for programmes and channels, for example, as well as social features like chat. There are many more new features to come!”

Lost

I am not watching LOST since the very very very disappointing Season 2 final. And as it seems I was right not watching anymore.

Now there’s a blog article about just what happened until now and how badly everything went wrong.

beware of the teeth bleachers!

No one would have thought that the teeth bleaching overlords are already among us.

I was watching TV when this showed up:

What’s this, you’re wondering. But wonder no more: It’s a teeth bleaching device on the one hand. And a adult torturing device on the other. You don’t just look completely moronic with this thing, you also get a manic grinning concreted into your face for everyone to see.

The TV shopping blokes are even suggesting you should give it to your neighbours kids (you don’t have any, have you?) and let them feel the pain. And well, it’s just 49,95…that’s cheap, compared to the money you have to pay for your cable tv, which is almost as painful…

happy bleached kids…yeah!

Back to business: WTF! This was one of the weirdest TV evenings I ever had. I watched an american tv show called “Dirty Jobs” where some guy does quite strange jobs. In fact: When you live in a more modern country like, let’s say… Germany, where we (thankfully were) stopped making war on everyone else in 1945 – well – when you live in such a country, you are really really surprised what a big part of the states is third world territory… And then this: teeth bleaching the hard way… TV is getting stranger and stranger everyday. There are a lot good things coming over the big sea from america…but please; no more american tv shows…

P.S.: sorry for the picture quality…it’s just a bad analog cable tv…

Serien und wie ich sie sehe…

Achtung Satire!

Grey’s Anatomie, ER,…

Was fasziniert Menschen an Krankenhausserien?

King of Queens, Eine schrecklich nette Familie

Bill Cosby Show

J.A.G., Stargate, Navy CIS,…

“Sir! We have lost Intelligence! I repeat: We have no Intelligence!”

program your YAPS VCR recordings from within tvbrowser…

I recently wrote about the progress I made with YAPS – the multicast to unicast proxy that suddenly became even a vcr. And today I found “TVBrowser“:

“TV-Browser is a free electronic program guide. It offers more than 140 mainly german stations.”

You get everything you might expect from an electronic program guide with TV-Browser and even more. It’s extensible and fast. The extensibility is exactly the reason why I am using it as the EPG frontend for YAPS/VCR.

I used the WebSearch Plugin of TV Browser to actually do a http-request on the YAPS/VCR webserver. This request adds the recording to the schedule list…easy as it could be…

It looks like this:

right click on the programme and you’re about to
program the recording…

Infact the only thing I had to do is to add one line to the WebSearch Plugin config, which looks like this:

Simple, isn’t it… one webrequest and the recording is added.

Finally I’ve got a great EPG to program my recordings…yeeehaaa!

udp multicast to tcp unicast proxy extended to be a vcr…

Some weeks ago I wrote about that UDP to TCP Proxy I wrote. And since I am mainly using it for DVB-S tv watching I always wanted it to be a VCR as well. So I extended YAPS to be a VCR.

At the moment I am redoing the Web-Interface of the VCR to give it a shiny and sleek finish, but in the meantime I want to give you the chance to take a look on YAPS+VCR in action, and of course an even deeper look into the sourcecode:

this is the “Add new timer…” screen

this is the home page of the vcr…showing one programmed timer..

So apparently some things happened the last days. I would appreciate any comments on the application and the sourcecode. So feel free to download and use. I am releasing it, as usual, under the BSD license.

You can download the sourcecode here: YAPS12.zip (375,35 KB)

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is sort-of back…

“Mike Nelson – the comic genius behind MST3K – has launched a new site called RiffTrax, where he provides an audio commentary track to mainstream films that you can download and listen to while watching the movie.”

For just $1.99 (beta pricing!) you get a commentary track for a growing number of movies…really really great stuff.

udp multicast to tcp unicast proxy YAPS revisited…and bugfixed

Yesterday I had an idea how I could fix the last remaining problem in my udp multicast to tcp unicast proxy server (YAPS).

The last time I had to report this:

“There are some glitches I am afraid to say: one known bug is that there are 12 bytes to much in the outgoing data stream which corrupts the picture. If anyone here can fix it: Do it please 😉 I tried one day and I could not find a solution for the problem.”

My idea was now, that those glitches are possibly there because some bytes of the header remain in each packet and therefore the movie stream itself is destroyed. MPlayer was able to display something, but as I said…glitches.

So I made a method that actually calculates the size of the header of each RTP packet and then removes this header:

   1: public byte[] killRTPheader(byte[] b,ref int inlength)
   2:  {
   3:  byte[] outbytes = new byte[1600];
   4:  int headersize = 12+4*((b[0] >> 0) & 0x0f);
   5:    Array.ConstrainedCopy(b, headersize, outbytes, 0, inlength - headersize);
   6:    inlength = inlength - headersize;
   7:  return outbytes;
   8:  }

The results speak for themselves: A perfect sound and picture.

Beside that I added some additional features. Read the source and you’ll find out.

You can grab the source and binaries here: YAPS.zip (24,74 KB)

Weizenbaum. Rebel at Work.

Peter Haas and Silvia Holzinger did a film called “Weizenbaum. Rebel at Work.” and I think you should hear about it:

“The film spans 8 decades of Joseph Weizenbaum’s life. It provides a stage for his humorous narrative depicting a World of Yesterday while reflecting on the dawn of the computer age. It follows 83-year-old Weizenbaum on some of his numerous public lessons, effortlessly entertaining overcrowded lecture halls.

The old man is an up-to-date chronicler, a chief witness against militarism and the myths of technological progress, but he remains a modest, funny and most reflective story teller.”

It’ll be available in german language in august and later this year in english.

meet the Jetsons: a new type of elevator

Have you ever seen the Jetsons? If so, you might remember the vacuum elevators. Well. If you ever wanted to have one of those, you can now:

“It is our self-supporting vacuum elevator; a light and resistant structure built with aluminium and polycarbonate. By simple principles of physics; the difference in air pressure above and beneath the vacuum elevator cab literally transports you by air. It is the vacuum pumps or turbines that pull you up to the next Floor and the slow release of air pressure that floats you down.

Pneumatic Vacuum Elevators are easier to install, maintain, and operate than traditional elevators. They are especially ideal for existing homes due to their compact design because excavating a pit, and hoistway are not required. Air pressure above and beneath the elevator cab are the key to transporting.

The reliability and safety of these vacuum elevators are unsurpassed due to the physics behind the design; it is virtually impossible to get stuck between floors, or freefall.”

the world championship live…in your telnet terminal…

When you don’t have the chance to watch the football world championship live on tv, you can watch it on a very nerdy way: ascii-art telnet livestream.

You cannot deny the similarities to the actual tv picture…but you need to be very nerdy and/or very desperate to watch it this way…
