My beloved Canon PowerShot A400 digital camera just left us. It was a great camera that only served 8764 pictures in it’s too-short life. Bought in March 2005 and now gone forever.

Might be just a coincidence but did your camera die due to a problem with the connection to the CCD sensor? Or otherwise, what was the problem? At least my PowerShot A75 shows the symptoms of this flaw (well-known by the manufacturers) since two weeks ago. See:

the only problem I had with the A400 was: There was one pixel defect in every picture … but besides that – no problem whatsoever. The Camera died because the small tft display was cracked by something in my bag – and therefore the camera stopped working completely…it seemed as if the display is connected in series with the rest of the electronics.
OK, seems I was about to develop some kind of paranoia. ;-) My issue is settled then…
