Amplifico: great music – support the band

I am usually into scottish bands – and in this time once again it’s a band from Scotland that pleases my ears…It’s name: Amplifico.

There are a some songs downloadable on their site and you can listen to more of their songs on the Podsafe Music Network – but you definitely want to buy their CDs and support them directly.

Songs for the South: Microsoft Employees for the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort

I really quarreled with me if I should post this article. But I do it because of the great music. One more word about my thoughts: I only want to have such real-life content on this website that regards me and my adjacency. Since this website is about technology and interesting things I don’t want to deal with daily news – and catastrophes are such news I don’t want to deal with on this website.

But now go and buy this album. It’s really great – and that’s not only because it’s completely made by Musicians who are also Microsoft Employees.

“This album has been made possible by the generous donation of music from 16 artists. These 16 artists (or contributing artists) are employees of Microsoft, and will receive no compensation from the sale of this album.

In soliciting content for this compilation, there were submitted many times the number of tracks than could fit on the CD. While the artists and tracks below represent the public face of this generosity, the willingness of the music community at Microsoft to contribute was immediate and significant. Thanks go to all who submitted tracks – both those on this album, and those not.”

Industrial and strong melodies? – misnomer

I just made a great music discovery: misnormer. This band is listed under the industrial category of the common free music portals – but in my opinion it’s not really industrial…it’s softer…it’s more melodic…

Misnormer calls itself “one of the UK’s biggest independent bands” and it’s possibly right. Misnormer makes definitly some of the finest tracks in their genre…

Because misnormer is an independent band they depend on the support from their fans. And that’s why you should go and support them by buying their music here.

So! Go, download, buy and spread the word!

second discovery of today: Metisse

Anyone here knows the series “Dead Like Me“?

I really like that series and from time to time there’s a slow and really nice song played in the background… That song is called “Boom Boom Ba” and is what I would call a catchy tune. It’s like I know parts of the song since years. But all together its a really new song that once heard you cannot get out of your mind for days.

But beside that one song Metisse is an all-round duo with so many facettes. If you want to be surprised by great music than Metisse is definitly worth a look.

first discovery of today: Goldfrapp – Black Cherry

Today it’s the day of music discoveries. I just found two great new artists/bands.

The first one is Goldfrapp. My colleague Hilmar sent me an eMail in which he strongly recommended Goldfrapp – especially because there is a new album coming up soon.

I instantly surfed to my favourite music store and took a look onto Goldfrapps current album “Black Cherry”. And after listening to the first two tracks I bought the thing.

I am looking forward to their upcoming album, even though I don’t like the new albums title song “Ooh La La”…it’s to soft and normal, ready for airplay…well maybe someone else will like it…

My favourite tracks on “Black Cherry” are Train and Black Cherry… awesome tracks.

Scissor Sisters: Scissor Sisters

ask Amazon to buy it…

So last week there was the TechEd Party. And the Scissor Sisters played there…And after the show I had to get the album. And there it is. Ordered on Thursday. Arrived at Saturday….

First: For me it’s a two part album. First half of the songs are great. Fantastic melodies and arrangements… but second there are songs that, – well just do not fit into the album…

Nevertheless I strongly recommend buying this album…

P.S.: my favourite Songs of course: Laura, Comfortable Numb, Take your Mama out

P.P.S.: No I am not gay. Just loving great music.

more music: Ennio Morricone Remixes

I am definitely not a fan of western-movies but these two CDs are splendid! All the melodies you’ve heard sometimes perfectly remixed. It’s mainly electronic and pop focused. The different artists remixed Ennio Morricones songs better than you would expect. Unfortunately the Volume 2 CD is not as good as the Volume 1 but it’s a buy you won’t regret.

data Panik by Air Mail

It seems that today is one of those days where the things come together ;) So I checked my mailbox and look what I’ve got:

The newest and finest from John, Steven and the beautiful Amanda. It’s a limited 7″ record and available only through their website.

AFTER OVER A WEEK OF STAMPING THE RECORDS AND SLEEVES THEN PUTTING THEM ALL TOGETHER WITH A NICE INSERT, THEY ARE READY TO BUY!! >P> THIS IS THE FIRST RELEASE FROM MANDA, JOHN AND STEVEN UNDER THE NAME ‘DATA PANIK’. THE 7″ IS LIMITED TO 500 AND EACH COPY IS HAND NUMBERED BY THE BAND.” (obviously their shift key is malfunctioning)

And what a great record. It’s just like abi_girl said in dataPaniks flickr photostream: “you never fail to completely and utterly blow me away, you’re maturing musically in the most fantastic way..you’re ace at what you do. don’t ever stop”.

I don’t know if there are any of the 7-inches left – but you can buy the two songs via download on their website…it’s really really worth the money.

two A-Sides…of course, it’s dataPanik!

collectible!

Don’t miss dataPaniks flickr photostream. Amanda is almost daily putting new pictures up there…

Granufunk album Release

Today granufunk aka Jacob Grain contacted me after he got back from London, His first record was officially released yesterday – pictures of the party will be available shortly! And don’t forget to read the other article about granufunk.

“GRANUFUNK’is an album of magnetic originality; a true case of opposites attracting. The minimalist, oft haunting calmness underlying each song is masterfully juxtaposed against the agitated rhythms and glitchy beats inherent in each track. While the seamless continuity lies in its stargazing melancholia and curious wisdom, ‘GRANUFUNK’ surprises at every opportunity, utilising discordant grinding beats, whispering bi-lingual lyrics (by guest vocalist Sonni Plankton),delicate programming, booming basslines, and spine-tingling melodies. Throughout, GRANUFUNK creates a unique ambience through a mixture of harsh scarred urban brokenbeat and earthy jazz. ‘GRANUFUNK’ is an album of rich, poignant material, with a potent lingering after effect.”

“Granufunk”

As a result of the album-release by the label sonic360, granufunk is also available via iTunes.

Moby and the rediscovery of melody

After some really great style mixture albums Moby is back to enlighten our lifes with even better music. Since some weeks Mobys new album “Hotel” is available in stores – time enough for me to grab it and take a hear.

I called this article “rediscovery of melody” – and it’s a fact: It’s been ages since Moby gave us such canorous songs. As usual each one is great and greater ;) I personally fell instantly in love with “Raining Again”, “Lift Me Up” and “Very”. Awesome tracks!

Just one thing: PLEASE USE LESS FILTERS. The vocals and some samples on the album are constantly hissing, swooshing. This is annoying because in the first place I thought my stereo broke.

Emma’s Mini: Beat Generation Mad Trick

On my proceeding mission to evangelise the world with great music I have something for you. It’s even more than just music: it’s a seminal way of buying music. But from the beginning: First the music.

Emma’s Mini: Beat Generation Mad Trick

It’s actually the first album of Emma’s Mini. And it’s not brand new because it came out in 2003. But it’s exactly what I had in mind that very moment I found it. I only heard one song and I bought the ablum straigt away. And I did not regret it. It’s cool. It’s innovative. Fits perfectly in my collection and will fit even more perfect in yours.

Because maybe the fewest will know Emma’s Mini already, here’s a short info on them:

“emma’s mini is a duo based in Seattle, WA. They first started making music together in March of 2002 and in April of 2003 they self-released their first album, beat generation mad trick.

Taking their cue from bands such as lamb, Massive Attack and Moloko, emma’s mini is creating a new and exciting sound, seamlessly blending Suzanne McClean’s rich, lush vocals with Demian Shoemaker’s innovative beats and soundscapes.”

And indeed: Suzannes voice is great… and “soundscapes” is the word I also would have chosen when I should describe the music itself… Infact: Go and hear the complete album. And more important: If you like it, buy it! It’s really worth the money. (what a great transition…)

Emma’s Mini is not under contract at a major label. Infact they are – as far as i know – not under any contract. But they sell their music through Magnatune.

And Magnatune describes itself that way:

“We call it “try before you buy.” It’s the shareware model applied to music. Listen to 356 complete MP3 albums we’ve picked (not 30 second snippets). We let the music sell itself, because we think that’s the best way to get you excited by it. Our selection is intentionally small: we never waste your time with mediocre music. If you like what you hear, download an album for as little as $5 (you pick the price), or buy a real CD, or license our music for commercial use. Artists keep half of every purchase. And unlike most record labels, our artists keep all the rights to their music. No major label connections and no venture capital. We are not evil.”

And they mean it. You can choose how much you would like to pay for the music…from 5 bucks upward…that’s great because you get the music without DRM or any other limitation… You even buy the exploitation right on the tunes… How cool is that!?

Magnatunes recommends a price…but you can change it easily, preferably upward.. ;-)

Welcome to Clayborne: ein Podcast Thriller

“Welcome to Clayborne, the small, scenic township in the far north of New Zealand´s North Island.

It’s a friendly little town – home to a pub, a general store, a service station and – up on the hill – the southernmost communication satellite station of American communication giant, Koestler Industries.”
